L-Fucose - The Sweet Anti-Aging Supplement for Personal Care Products

L-Fucose (INCI registration: Fucose) is a monosaccharide which can be found in nature in larger quantities for example in brown-algae. Fucose occurs, however, also in many human organs such as the skin or the nervous system. Until today, L-Fucose is primarily extracted from maritime brown-algae. This production process, which is accompanied by the destruction of the algae, shows the further disadvantage of extremely low yield - for the production of 1 kg L-Fucose the harvest of approximately 40 tons of brown-algae is required. On the other hand, the quality and quantity of the L-Fucose won by extracting the monosaccharide from algae depends considerably on the prevailing weather conditions and season.

L-Fucose is a white, crystalline product. The L-Fucose produced by Jennewein Biotechnologie GmbH is identical to the monosaccharide found in nature. By the use of the innovative production process developed by Jennewein Biotechnologie GmbH, it now became possible to produce L-Fucose in large quantity, at affordable cost and high and constant purity.

The Characteristics of L-Fucose

Profound scientific studies of various research institutes show that L-Fucose considerably reduces skin-aging effects. For example, it was shown that L-Fucose has the scientifically proven benefits when added in sufficientquantities in skin-cream of:
  • Reducing wrinkles - by the thickening of the dermis and epidermis and the regulation of hydration of the skin-cells
  • Protecting against or reducing age-induced decomposition and thus reduction in skin thickness - by inhibition of deleterious enzymes of the enzyme group Elastase-type Endopepitidase (MMP-9), which is responsible for the reduction of the skin-thickness with increasing age
  • Improved elasticity of the skin - by the stimulation of elastin biosynthesis
  • Strengthening of the epidermis - by the proliferation of skin cells
  • Improved cell protection - by reduction of oxidative stress

Scientifically Proven Effectiveness

The study of Robert, C. et al (2005), for example, has shown a considerable positive effect of L-Fucose containing skin-cream on the treatment of periorbital wrinkles. In this in-vivo study 15 probants with considerable wrinkles around their eyes, received twice a day a treatment with L-Fucose containing skin-cream over a period of 4 weeks. The results of the study showed a significant reduction of the wrinkles (>65%) at the majority of the probants (see diagram - figure displays the percentage change on right and left eye-region).

Beyond the in-vivo study of Robert, C. et al (2005) there exists a multitude of scientific studies, which describe the beneficial effects of L-Fucose. You can find under the rubric "Scientific References" a selection of the most important studies, which have been published in renowned journals.

Fields of Application

L-Fucose is an active molecule, which is easily soluble in water and shows a high stability. Recommended fields of application of L-Fucose of Jennewein Biotechnologie GmbH are in particular anti-aging, sensitive skin, as well as skin-regeneration. The optimal concentration of L-Fucose so as to take fully advantage of its positive effects is between 0.1% and 1.0% L-Fucose in the final product such as skin-cream, for example.

There are no known adverse effects of L-Fucose in general nor in the case of excess dosage in particular. In some countries L-Fucose is even used as a food supplement and marketed as one of the "eight essential sugars". Scientific research concentrates here in particular on potential positive effects of L-Fucose on the immune- and neuronal-system. The intake of L-Fucose is here supposed to improve certain functions of the neuronal system and in particular increase the capacity of the long-term memory.
